said he had been eighteen years in the country, and would probably end his life there, for except under peculiar circumstances, no member of the missions ever returned to France.
There were about 160,000 Christians in his district, being two-fifths of the whole number in Tonquin, namely, 400,000; he has under him twenty-six French and 160 native priests, who are assisted by a large staff of teachers. The head-quarters of the mission are on an estate situated about forty miles from Hanoi, which is formed partly by his converts and partly by himself, producing all that is required for the purposes of the mission. He encourages all kinds of industries, such as weaving, embroidery, silk culture, incrustations (a species of inlaying wood with mother-of-pearl), cigars, after the European shape. The land produces cotton, hemp, castor oil, mulberry trees, for silk culture, betel nut, rice, &c., and their sale helps to support the mission; altogether the establishment comprises some 900 persons, all of whom are fed daily. I remarked upon his cheerfulness under the prospect of never seeing his home again. He said his predecessors had died at their post, as it was his duty to do.
During my stay at Hanoi I visited the French Concession, referred to in the beginning of this depatch. It is finely situated on the right bank of the Songkoi, close to the city, about fifty acres in extent, and surrounded on three sides by a wall, Above 2,000 Annamite coolies, chiefly women, are the fourth facing the river. engaged in raising it above the highest water level, and a Consulate, barracks, and military store departments are nearly completed. M. de Kergaradce told me that the space allowed was originally smaller, but as the Annamite Government wanted the Examination Hall, which is now the Consulate and barracks, he agreed to surrender it in October next if they would increase the Concession, which they agreed to, and the works are being pressed forward to enable him to keep his promise.
I left Hanoi on the morning of the 12th ultimo, and reached Haphong the following afternoon. Here we remained until the 16th waiting for a pilot, and on that afternoon got under weigh and left the river for Hainan.
was desirous of placing you will think this despatch somewhat prolix, but I fear before you as condensed an account as possible of the events which led to the present situation in Tonquin, and that necessitated a series of details.
As regards mercantile matters and the resources of Tonquin as a country for Nothing, trade, my short visit prevented my obtaining all the information I desired. in fact, but a residence of a month or two could enable me to prosecute satisfactory inquiries in that direction, for it takes time and patience to discover the capabilities of an castern country.
I arrived at Hong Kong on the 25th ultimo, having been absent just one month.
I have, &c.
